花好月圆 庆团圆

Grand Park City Hall, 10 Coleman Street Singapore 179809

Kudos to the kind folks at Park Hotel Group for inviting me to the tasting event for the upcoming Mid-Autumn Festival feature – Moon Cakes

Mid-Autumn Festival is widely celebrated by Oriental Asians & many more who observe the lunar calendar. The occasion calls for family & loved ones to convene reunion & communal feasts, where the highlight is of the event is dazzled with the savoring of Moon Cakes & fine Chinese teas.

Mid-autumn at Park Hotel is going to be more memorable than you would expect. For the team has put together an ensemble of gastronomic goodness, all the more apt if you have in-laws, clients & business associates to impress come September 2014.

Signature Royal Treasures (baked) – best served warm
This I find would be quite appropriate for those who love the “old-skool” look & feel; the good old croissant-like flaky skin, packed with choice of silky yam paste or golden pumpkin with mung bean paste, and choice of single or double yolk are nicely balanced with natural sweetness.

Sparkling Snowskin Treasures – best served chilled
I cannot recall when was the last time I’ve tasted Snowskin Moon Cakes that have gotten me addicted. This collection glitters literally, impresses with confection pearl-like shimmers. I believe will be a big hit for the young & old.

The Pandan flavoured (green) comes with a rich white chocolate truffle core. I have to admit I was confused on hearing the description, but I’ll advice that you let your palates do the comprehension.

The Lychee flavoured (white) as its name suggests is fruity as it is. A definite alternative for those who have minimal threshold for the king of fruits – Durians. This is light and fragrant, and doesn’t warrant excessive beverage intake.

The Nougat filling (Red) is unique where the east meets west. Soft and chewy with occasional surprises of crunch creates a new paradigm for Moon Cake appreciation.

The Cognac (Gold) earned many thumbs up. The paste is silky smooth, and has a cognac chocolate core in the middle. For it to be quickly wiped out soon as it’s served, says it all.

* Quite frankly, in lieu of the over commercialized, over sweetened variety out in the market for a long time, it’s been ages since I’ve finally enjoyed Snowskin Moon Cakes this much.

Traditional Golden Treasures (baked) – best served warm
This is for the traditionalists, who stick by the tried & tested for generations. The all familiar white lotus sees paste is not going to stick to your rack of ivory. Hence, will not be a problem with older folks with dentures. They come in single & double yolk, while the baked skin crumbles easily as you sink your teeth in.

Healthy Golden Treasures ‘Vegetarian’ (baked) – best served warm
This is pretty good for the weight watchers, the health conscious, and those on a slightly stricter diet than most others (low sugar content optional). Pandan flavoured baked skin, filled with white lotus seed paste, coupled with pine & melon seeds or lightly salted macadamia nuts.

It is customary for the affluent & socialites to be exchanging Moon Cakes during the festivities, and Park Royal has designed a pretty impressive assortment available for your bragging rights.
