Beast & Butterflies, the name in itself suggests a concept of fusion, a combination of extreme opposites, and with it, balance redefined. In attendance for this session, were folks from HungryGoWhere, The Arctic Star, Madame Chewy, Chubby Botak Koala and Ivan Teh Runningman.
Situated after the lobby of the spanking new M Social Hotel, be overwhelmed by the signature works of the renowned & widely mentioned designer- Philippe Starck. The collision of minimalist elements with elaborate detailed furnishing, makes it a sight to behold. Books vs psychedelic lava lamps, soft cushion against straight lined upholstered couches, cold inanimate walls with wall mount animated tablet graphics (help yourselves to the charging cables for your android devices while you dine), and the list goes on.
B&B leverages on a crew of diverse nationals/ ethnicity, that they may better serve the projected intercontinental hotel guests & locals alike. The staffing were nicely rationed that their attention & services rendered were very prompt.
We were treated to a good mix of signatures in form or appetizers, mains & desserts. in no order of merit, I find the following to be mention worthy.
Oyster Shots – ordered in pairs, served in crystal shot glasses bearing the form of sea urchins. Fresh & fleshy, with a nice tangy thai salad influenced dressing. For oyster lovers, be advised that these shooters can be pretty addictive, because, I was.
Duck Crispies – familiar yet unfamiliar surprise. Served up in a row and on a stone platter. Thin crispy cracker-like deep fried wanton that crumbles neatly, revealing the fragrant juicy shredded/ pulled duck meat filling on the inside. Tasty on its own, I didn’t find it necessary for dips.
Despite my best efforts, the Crispy Spinach, Simply Scallop & Boneless Wings were quickly snapped up. Empirical theory suggests all three are MUST TRIES.
Fragrant Sea – Culinary chemistry of tea and soup infusion. Each sip packed with layers of flavors and fragrance. Simple yet complex… Acquired taste, try it!
Ham Hock – German pork knuckle, served with a good helping of Thai inspired tangy chili dip (จิ้มน้ำพริก). Crispy on the outside, moist & juicy on the inside. In my opinion, the จิ้มน้ำพริก goes really well like a horse & carriage.
Beef Ichiban – US wagyu beef, juicy tender, on a dollop of Indian inspired masala potato gratin with asparagus. The shoyu with a ball of mustard for stronger taste preference. I love my beef the way they are, didn’t find it necessary to use the sauce.
Rack of Lamb – Caramelized on the outside, juicy tender on the inside. If anything, it’s the specimen for medium rare. Accompanied with deep fried thin slices lotus root & brocolli, on braised glutinous rice, served on a slab of hot stone. Game lovers must try!
Chicken Chorizo – Tender broiled chicken breast, on a chorito mashed potato, drizzled with scallion sauce. Weight watchers should find interest in this.
Lobster Porridge – Teochew style rice grain porridge, in crab broth, served with lobster & abalone. For a change, wine & dine now comes in a softer variant without compromising in flavor.
Cody Mee – Baked Atlantic cod fillet with superior soy sauce cradled in a ladle, served with braised bailing mushroom, brocolini & crispy egg noodles. Simple yet profound, lovely.
Extravagance – The signature dessert 4 hit combo, comprising of: Sawadee (mango sticky rice), Chocoholic… Wait for the molten chocolate to be poured over, Yoghurt & Lime Mousse topped with fresh strawberry chunks & sugar crystal on top, and last but not least… Yam Brulee.
Just like the appetizers & mains, the desserts though featured strong influences of specific genres, each came with a light contrasting twist. Personal favorite of the 4, I poll in favor of Yam Brulee.
The beverage menu features pretty common selections, but the cocktails are unique to the joint. They also offer test tube wines (pictured: So Shiok!), found nowhere else.
If the widely followed sitcom F.R.I.E.N.D.S. could catapult the actors to stardom, and all revolving around the couch of a coffee joint… I suppose Beast & Butterflies would be a more fulfilling setting for any form of casual communion among friends. Soothing ambience, nice décor, comfortable seating, good food, pleasant service… and most importantly, prices affordable. [ Reserve a Table ]
