Wonderful Bapsang 원더풀밥상, Thomson (Review) | Epicurious Caniggia

For our local context, apart from Korean concept eateries found dotted across the island, especially the ones entrenched in the Tanjong Pagar precinct, a simple indicator that the eatery is somewhat authentic, would be one that offers in-house pickled variants of kimchi and/or banchan.

Wonderful Bapsang is one such restaurant that features & retail their inhouse pickled signatures at their store front. Caters to passers-by, as well as patrons that want to take home some memories to satiate the palates.

As a lover of proteins, Yukhoe has since become a rare find across the island. When I saw it listed on their menu, it was a no brainer; my buddy & I were quickly seated and had our orders taken.

While waiting for the orders to be prepared, like most Korean eateries, the banchan would be served. The assortment of colors and tastes sufficed to rouse & awaken the palates.

As I’ve observed, the selections of Banchan may vary daily, and from outlet to outlet; you’ll never know what you’re going to get for each visit.

Among the 6 offered, I found the seasoned seaweed and the spinach to be most memorable as they’re rather rare locally. Needless to say, the cabbage and cucumber kimchi were among the better ones I’ve tasted locally too.

The Beef Bibimbap comes with assortment of julienned carrots & radish, thin sliced mushrooms, cucumber, beansprouts and shredded seaweed, topped with a sunny side up egg (yolk not quite runny though), drizzled with decent amount of sesame seeds, and the rice is served separate, allowing the indulgence to be better controlled if one prefers lesser carbohydrates.

The Yukhoe Bibimbap visually is a lot more appealing, the beef tartare is lightly seasoned shaped like a well cradling a fresh cracked raw egg in the middle, drizzled with fine chopped spring onions & sesame seeds, layered on top of assortment of julienned carrots & radish, thin sliced mushrooms, cucumber, beansprouts and shredded seaweed, and alfalfa sprouts tucked in to fill gaps… all blanketing the rice underneath.

Give your bibimbap a thorough toss and proper mix, so you get a taste of everything from the first to the last bite. I’ll most certainly be back for the Yukhoe Bibimbap~!

Meanwhile, the scorching season is making a rapid come back, I’ll soon be on the hunt for refreshing NaengMyeon to cool myself off on any given day/ evening.
